Prolific as both a theorist and a literary author, Glissant started his career as a contemporary of Frantz Fanon in the early days of francophone postcolonial thought. In the latter part of his career, by contrast, Glissants vision pushed beyond the boundaries of postcolonialism to encompass the contemporary phenomenon of globalisation. In this study, Sam Coombes offers a detailed analysis of the entirety of Glissant’s thought, setting out the reasons why Glissants vision for a world of intercultural interaction both reflects but also seeks to provide a correction to some of the leading tendencies commonly associated with contemporary theory today. Offering detailed analyses of key concepts such as creolisation, Relation, errantry, opacity and the detour, Sam Coombes analyses the manifold ways in which Glissants oeuvre of the last twenty or so years, being both illuminating and critical of the world we live in, could prove vital to our collective futures. Glissants oeuvre paves the way for an alternative vision for the 21st century, one which makes full use of the opportunities for mass intercultural communication which globalisation and the information revolution have provided but which nevertheless guarantees full respect for minoritarian cultures and languages.
Le début de l’œuvre d’Edouard Glissant, théoricien et écrivain prolifique mais aussi contemporain de Frantz Fanon, coïncide avec le moment où la pensée post-coloniale francophone n’en était encore qu’à ses débuts. Plus tard, sa vision s’est redéployée au-delà du post-colonial pour penser la mondialisation. Ce livre, qui s’articule à une analyse de l’œuvre politique d’Edouard Glissant explique les raisons pour lesquelles la vision glissantienne d’un monde d’interactions culturelles est un reflet qui renvoie mais aussi corrige certaines des tendances majeures associées à la théorie contemporaine aujourd’hui. Sam Coombes se livre à une analyse détaillée des concepts clé de l’œuvre de Glissant, tels que la créolisation, la Relation, l’errance, l’opacité et le détour pour démontrer comment l’œuvre de Glissant, qui critique et illumine le monde que nous habitons, représente un prisme essentiel à la compréhension de l’avenir collectif de l’humanité.
